MARIA PILEGGI

Il 23 Giugno del 1939 nacque a Capistrano una dolce bimba che con gli anni avrebbe dimostrato di essere un’essere veramente meraviglioso. La bambina fu chiamata Maria dai suoi genitori Michele Mendaglio e di Palma Tucci. Crebbe nel paese, vicino alla chiesa e da giovane donna sposo` Saro Pileggi, anch’esso capistranese. In Italia ebbero quattro bellissimi bambini, Rocco, Palma, Concetta e Michelina.

Maria, Saro e i loro quattro figli lasciarono l’Italia nel 1963 e si stabilirono a Montreal, in Canada dove crebbero con molti sacrifici e sudori la loro bellissima famiglia. A Montreal ebbero due altri figli, Alba e Tony.

Il 1968, la figlia Palma, all’eta` di otto anni, incomincio` a stare male. Infatti, improvvisamente nel 1968 perse quasi tutta la vista a causa di liquido nel cervello causato da tumori. Da quel punto inizio` un vero e proprio calvario sia per la dolce bimba che per i genitori.  Palma subi` ben 14 operazioni, per togliere i tumori che crescevano continuamente sulla superficie del cervello.

Dopo che si sposarono quasi tutti i figli, il marito volle ritornare di nuovo a Capistrano e Maria “per farlo contento” lo segui`, insieme alla figlia Palma.

Vissero a Capistrano per quattro anni, ma, quando il marito incomincio` a stare male, dovettero di nuovo ritornare a Montreal. Accertamenti medici rivelarono che Saro aveva il cancro nelle ossa e che non vi era cura alcuna. Tutt’a un tratto Maria si trovo` sia con la figlia molto ammalata e con un marito in un stato di grande sofferenza.

Malgrado l’enorme stress, Maria rimase forte, dolce e amorevole sia verso il marito che la figlia. Fino alla morte del marito, lei lo accudi` a casa, facendo si che fosse circondato da tante cure a tanto affetto.

Dopo la morte del marito, i problemi con la figlia Palma si moltiplicarono. Dopo la vista s’incomincio` ad indebolire anche l’udito e l’equilibrio ando` anche a mancare.

La figlia aveva continuamente bisogno di medici, specialisti ed ospedali. Pur di non disturbare i figli che lavoravano, lei portava sua figlia per accertamenti e visite mediche con l’autobus, malgrado i suoi problemi con la schiena e le ginocchia. Recentemente, pero’, la figlia e` diventata cosi` debole che gli altri figli devono per forza partecipare, e lo fanno con piacere.

Cio` che rende Maria un angelo e` la sua incredibile forza mentale, la sua immensa dolcezza, la sua dignita`, la sua grande pazienza e il grande amore che ha verso i suoi figli e tutti i suoi parenti ed amici. Sia parenti che amici l’apprezzano enormemente, perche` come Maria ce ne stanno poche.

Tutti in famiglia siamo concordi che Maria Pileggi e` un vero e proprio angelo. Sia come madre, come zia, come sorella o amica, Maria  e` insorpassabile, e di certo si merita di essere onorata come Angelo Capistranese.

June 23, 1939 a baby was born in Capistrano who, with the years, would have proven to be a very special human being.  The little girl was named Maria by her parents Michele Mendaglio and Palma Tucci. She grew up near the church and when she became a  young woman she married Saro Pileggi, also a capistranese.  The two had four children: Rocco, Palma, Concetta and Michelina. 

 Maria, Saro and their four children left Italy in 1963 and established themselves in Montreal, Canada, where they raised their children with many sacrifices. In Montreal, they had two more children: Tony and Alba.

 In 1968, their eight-year-old daughter, Palma, started feeling poorly.  In fact, one painful day that year, she suddenly lost most of her eyesight.  The cause: liquid in her brain caused by tumors.  That fateful day began a true ordeal for both Palma and her parents. Over the years, Palma had 14 operations to remove the tumors that grew continually on the surface of her brain.

 Once most of Maria’s children were married, her husband, Saro, decided to return to Italy. “To make him happy,” Maria went along and they returned to Capistrano with their daughter Palma.

They lived in Capistrano for four years, but, when the husband became ill, they had to return to Montreal.  Back in Canada doctors found that he had widespread bone cancer and that his condition was incurable. All of a sudden, Maria found herself having to look after two very ill family members.

 Despite the great stresses, Maria remained strong, sweet and very loving towards both her husband and her daughter.  She looked after her husband at home, until his death and did so with courage and much love.

 After her husband’s death, her daughter Palma showed further deterioration. Her hearing started deteriorating as well and she started losing control over her balance.

Palma needed doctors, specialists and hospitals continually.  So as not to trouble her married children who had to work, she would take Palma for various needed tests by taking a bus. She did this in spite of severe back and knee problems. Recently, given Maria’s health deterioration, her children have joined in and help their sister Palma gladly, whenever needed.

What makes Maria an angel is her incredible mental strength, her unparalleled sweetness, her endless patience and the great love she shows toward her family and friends.

 We family members are unanimous that Maria Mendaglio is a true angel.  As a mother, aunt, sister, or friend she is unsurpassable and certainly deserves to be called a “Capistrano Angel.”
